Overview
This article compares real capture quality across four 360° cameras used with OpenSpace: Ricoh Theta Z1, Insta360 X4, Insta360 X5, and Insta360 X6. All four cameras walked the same path across five locations on one project, so the images below can be compared side by side.
In well-lit conditions, indoors or outdoors, camera choice had little visible effect on image quality in these captures. In near-total darkness, the Ricoh Theta Z1 and Insta360 X5 recovered more ambient detail than the Insta360 X4.
These are captures from a single walk on one project, not controlled lab tests, so treat the comparisons as illustrative rather than exhaustive.
Location 1 — Well-lit interior
All four cameras produced clear, well-exposed images in this well-lit interior space. Framing differs slightly between cameras due to mounting position, but detail and color rendering are comparable across all four.
Location 2 — Dim interior hallway
In this dimly lit hallway, lit by a single bulb, image quality looks comparable across all four cameras, with similar exposure and visible detail.
Location 3 — Near-total darkness
This location was captured in near-total darkness, lit only by a handheld light. The Ricoh Theta Z1 and Insta360 X5 recovered visibly more ambient detail than the Insta360 X4, which rendered almost entirely black outside of the light source. The Insta360 X6 falls between the X4 and X5 in visible detail.
Location 4 — Bright sunlight, exterior
In direct sunlight, all four cameras produced sharp, well-exposed images. The Ricoh Theta Z1 image shows a visible red lens flare near the sun that does not appear in the Insta360 images.
Location 5 — Mixed indoor lighting
Under mixed indoor lighting, all four cameras produced comparable image quality and detail.
