Autodesk Model Import

Overview

This article covers how to import a model directly from Autodesk into OpenSpace. (If you’re not importing from Autodesk, you’ll need to manually upload a BIM or 3D model file from a local drive.)

In Autodesk, select Docs, Project Files Folder, then Permission settings: Assigned Create "View + Download" permission level.

Prerequisites

1. First, Enable the Autodesk Integration  on your OpenSpace project.
2. You must be a Hub Admin in Autodesk Build to install the OpenSpace integrations from the Autodesk App Marketplace. 
3. Sign in to your OpenSpace account with Autodesk SSO. (Note: If you log in to OpenSpace via email/password or a different SSO, then you will not be able to import a model from Autodesk.)

How to use Autodesk Model Import

To import a model for the first time:

1. Log in to OpenSpace via Autodesk SSO, either at the login page, your Profile avatar, or the Integrations tab in Settings (Site Admin and Org Admin only).
2. Navigate to Settings in your project.

Note: If the integration is not yet activated and connected to the corresponding project in Autodesk, this step must be completed before moving on to the next step. See the permissions section above.

3. Click Add Files and select Autodesk Import.

4. Select the desired file.

5. Click Import.
6. Once your file completes processing, we align your model to sheets that have captures. The alignment turnaround time is 1-12 hours. You can also perform self-serve model to sheet alignment by clicking Edit alignment in the Sheets aligned section.

How to update a model to a new Autodesk version

Updating to a new version of a model has the same requirements as your first import: Autodesk SSO login and the project linked to Autodesk via the Integrations tab.

1. When our system detects that a new version of your imported model is available from Autodesk, the Update button activates for that model’s row in the BIM tab on the project’s  Settings. Only Site and Org Admins have permissions to update.

2. Note: If the imported model is already the latest version, the Update button will be disabled and a “Model is latest version” hover message displays.

FAQ

What are integration requirements for importing a model from Autodesk?

In order to use this feature, you must:

• Be logged in via Autodesk SSO.
• Link the OpenSpace project to the associated Autodesk project. See the “How to” section above for details.

Does this feature work if the user logs in with Procore and/or if the project is linked to a Procore project?

Yes! OpenSpace supports the ability to have multiple integrations active at once. 

Does this feature support cloud/workshared models?

Yes! Autodesk Model Import in OpenSpace supports the import of Revit Workshared models.

Is this feature a “live view” or a two-way “sync” of my models in Autodesk??

No. The Autodesk Model Import feature enables you to upload (via cloud-to-cloud import) a model that’s been published to the Autodesk Document Management / Docs module into OpenSpace. There is no live sync.

What if I receive an error message when importing a model?

When uploading or importing multiple files, you’ll see status windows that let you know of errors such as unsupported format or invalid point cloud project selection. See our list of compatible file types in this Autodesk article.
